Adaptive Concepts

From WFM Labs

Adaptive Concepts is a series of pages presenting the core ideas of Adaptive, the WFM Labs book on workforce transformation in the Collaborative Intelligence Era — one page per chapter concept, written as standalone reference articles rather than chapter summaries. The series covers the foundations (the era shift, the history of the discipline, the change drivers, the operating frameworks, and the variance argument), the WFM Labs Maturity Model as the transformation framework, and one page per maturity level describing what that level looks like in operation.

The series

# Concept Status
1 The Collaborative Intelligence Era — the era shift, the enduring business model, and the five failing assumptions of traditional staffing Published
2 The Four Eras of Workforce Management — the discipline from Erlang to the AI moment, and the seed each era planted Published
3 The Ten Change Drivers — four pressure systems, ten scored diagnostics, and the workforce model as convergence point Published
4 Framework Selection for Workforce Transformation — the STARS diagnostic and the diagnose–justify–execute selection loop Published
5 Variance and Volatility in Service Operations — the two kinds of uncertainty, the two diagnostic errors, and the two-engine doctrine Published
6 The Maturity Model as a Transformation Framework — clustering, the phase transition, the input test, and the evidence chain Published
7 Level 1: The Excel Foundation — manual not broken; the death spiral and the instruments that stabilize it Published
8 Level 2: Structured Workforce Management — seeing faster than you can move; the error bound and the triangular tension Published
9 Level 3: The Automation Layer — the nervous system between systems; rule governance and the trust constraint Published
10 Level 4: Planning in Distributions — the plan becomes a cone; forecast–simulate–optimize, the ecosystem, and hit-rates against chosen bands Published
11 Level 5: Adaptive Orchestration — the operation run as a loop: sense before contact, decide the highest-value handler, act within guardrails, learn from every outcome Published
12 The Maturity Diagnostic and Pathways — five pillars scored, the median as position and the drag as the next move; the minimum moves from each level to the next Published

All twelve pages are published; the table lists the full arc so readers can see the shape of the argument, and the closing page returns the reader to their own operation with the five-pillar diagnostic.

How the series relates to existing pages

The series does not replace the wiki's operational pages — it supplies the conceptual layer above them. The WFM Labs Maturity Model™ page carries the full level-by-level operating detail; The Maturity Curve is the one-page orientation; The Case for Adaptive Workforce Management argues the adaptive thesis in operational form. Adaptive Concepts pages link downward into those and into the practice pages (Capacity Planning Cycle, Supply Elasticity in Workforce Planning, Process Decomposition (L0–L3)) wherever a concept lands in practice.
